breakfast {5:15} - i fell asleep at roughly 9:45 on monday night so i actually felt halfway human when my alarm went off at five yesterday. i decided i'd dip into my stash of quickly going bad bagel thins and try out my eggs on the cinnamon raisin ones i had. i always like the salty sweet combo so i used a little jam on the bagels as well. it ended up being really weird, but in a good way. that being said i do like to eat jam on grilled cheese sandwiches so don't take my word for it.
snack {10:00} - i have been RAVENOUS in the mornings lately. i think it's my body getting used to the 5 am wakeup call again. when i was eating lunch at 7 or 8, making it til lunch wasn't that much of a challenge - i just wasn't hungry until 12 or 1. i guess it makes sense that when i eat two hours earlier i'm hungry a lot earlier. i snagged a bag of hip pops from my students' breakfast bin (no worries, i waited until they all had their servings - i'm not that awful...except when breakfast is waffle sticks because then? i know no limits) and had those for a snack. i love these things, they are so awesome. they remind me of quakes but with cinnamon sugar on them and i could eat 9 bags easily.
lunch {12:45} - i have been all about the wraps for lunch lately. today's iteration was a chicken salad i whipped up with some leftover chicken tenders. i used 1 T mayonnaise, 2 T greek yogurt, 1 t spicy brown mustard, 1 t lemon juice, about 2 cups of diced chicken and half an asian pear. i like sweet stuff in my chicken salad (usually grapes) but had no other options besides pears and it was actually really good. it made about two servings and i'm looking forward to another wrap tomorrow. if i did it again i'd add almonds and celery. celery is the shit in chicken salad. i also had some carrots and trader joe's popcorn on the side.
snack {4:00} - on my way home i wolfed down an apple pie larabar. i still like my luna bars a lot better (much more like candy bars which is what i'm shooting for) but i have about 5 more larabars that i want to eat before i'll let myself spend more money on other bars. this is an area of my grocery budget i could easily pare down but it's just not gonna happen. i like my snack bars too much.
workout {5:30} - the weather has been super crappy all week in dc. rain, fog and a lot chillier than the weekend. i don't mind at all because i actually like the winter months, but it makes it a heck of a lot harder to get outside for a run. i fully intended on heading to the gym before going home but then i checked my email and i got a notification that a shipment i'd been anxiously awaiting had arrived and clearly i had to go home before the gym!
oh you gorgeous, gorgeous thing you. i asked my parents for a vitamix for christmas but knew it was a slightly ridiculous thing to ask for because...well, the vitamix is slightly ridiculous. but as they usually do, my parents came through in a huge way. on christmas morning my mom told me that i would be getting it shipped to my apartment because it didn't make sense to have it wrapped up and then have to ship it from indiana down to dc. we ended up shipping a ton of stuff anyway, but this precious cargo was just that - too precious. it was on backorder for a bit (i guess lots of generous parents gave their loving offspring the pinnacle of blenders for christmas as well?) but it got her yesterday! it was all i could do not to immediately tear into it and make a shake, but instead i forced myself to go down to my complex's gym and get my 3.5 miler in while fantasizing about what i would do with it when i got back upstairs. no shame.
dinner {6:30} - instead of having a shake for dinner, i opted to keep plowing through my leftovers. the best part about leftovers for dinner is that they are done super quickly and require very little cleanup. this sesame chicken from emily bites was really easy to toss together on sunday night and has been feeding me all week. i've got about 8 boxes of pasta in my pantry and i don't eat pasta that much but i'm going to have to start. one, i want to clear up that shelf space for more baking goods (my chocolate chips have nowhere to go!) and two, i really like pasta. i think i always forget about it because it takes so damn long for the water to boil and my attention span is not that long when it comes to crafting dinner. anyway, i recommend the sesame noodles. what i don't recommend is just slapping the leftovers into different containers without noticing what's going where. i ended up with a lot of chicken last night but on monday night i think i had two pieces of chicken and 4 snow peas in my entire dish.
dessert {8:30} - clearly my after dinner snack had to be a shake (and then some cereal - because i just can't end a night without some bones in bed while eating special k - i was a hungry beast today, not quite sure why but i just went with it and ate what i was craving). this shake had such an awesome consistency - i still need to figure out the vitamix a bit because i definitely didn't need as much water and could use more ice, but i'm used to trying not to kill my blender every time i make a shake, so it's not a bad learning curve to be on. i think i've definitely decided that my kitchen aid has been unseated as my favorite kitchen appliance. sorry, stand mixer, it was great while it lasted. i promise i'll still pull you out of your home when i need some cookies...
how were your wednesdays? my eats weren't super creative but they were all really delicious! and with this we've made it halfway through the week. two more sleeps between me and texas.
<3
I've been super hungry in the mornings too lately (go figure) and it's a really strange feeling. I eat lunch at 12 now instead of 3pm. Unheard of! I'd totally raid the kids snacks if I were you too. Popcorn? French toast sticks? Oh my gosh I'm going to visit my old elementary school today... the ideas are churning in my head now haha
ReplyDeletehaha i cannot IMAGINE waiting til 3 to eat lunch. i'd die! i usually have had breakfast, lunch and two snacks before then. and yeah girl the elementary food now is sick.
DeleteYour parents ROCK!! I've been wanting a vitamix for quite sometime, however I think it would be way to powerful to have out here =( Oh well.. Ill just live vigorously threw you.
ReplyDeletehaha they are the BEST...but yes, my lights flickered a bit when i first used it. live vicariously away!
DeleteI am so jealous of that Vitamix!! I also love the idea of a pear in chicken salad. I usually either do grapes or apples, but a pear would definitely be a fun twist.
ReplyDeleteyup - it was fun and i love asian pears so much so it really hit the spot!
DeleteWHAT ARE THOSE POPPED THINGS, you need to feed me. it is decided. i want to eat everything here, plus I bet your smoothies now taste bomb with that new appliance
ReplyDeletediscussed them in email. i will begin hoarding them starting tomorrow for you.
DeleteWill your parents adopt me??? That's awesome!!! And your eats fo the day look fabulous as always...proud of that breakfast too...always good to change it up
ReplyDeletewell no they won't adopt you. not because they would say no but because i'm selfish and like being the only girl. you can however meet them and they will love you and perhaps give you gifts for being my friend :)
DeleteSo jealous of your Vitamix...I wannnt! I also am super hungry the mornings I get up earlier. Guess it makes sense. I agree with you that Larabars are good but not as "candyish" as Luna bars, hence why I like Luna bars way more. The chocolate coconut one....so awesome.
ReplyDeletecome on over any time and use it! sometimes hayley i feel like we're the same person. chocolate coconut (AKA IT'S A SAMOA) are the bomb.com.
DeleteI always used to put fig jam on my egg sandwiches- sweet & salty combo ftw!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous of your vitamix, I'm definitely still lusting after one!
yum yum yum i need some fig jam stat. i love figs.
DeleteI feel ya on being ravenous in the mornings - I have no idea how people make it from breakfast to lunch without snacking, but it definitely might have something to do with waking up so ridiculously early. And I always thought jam on eggs or grilled cheese was completely normal =P
ReplyDeleteAlso, your parents are freakin' rockstars. Congrats on your Vita! My parents came through big time for me this Christmas by getting me a new stand mixer. Although the plethora of cookies is starting to become a problem. Might have to follow your advice and start pawning them off to friends/family/neighbors/strangers ;)
i have no idea either but i think it's definitely the early rising. i'm glad to hear how many people think that jam on sandwiches is normal because i love it. and thanks! i feel like i won the lottery. do it - gift random strangers with cookies but probably be prepared for them to think you're loco and maybe not eat them. how can you convince them they're not poison? i'll put my thinking cap on :)
DeleteI definitely notice that if I eat breakfast on the early end, I'm hungry for lunch earlier... Aka I have to eat every few hours or I become a hangry person :P Thankfully, I work in a cubicle and no one experiences my wrath. But when I get home at night after work and the gym, I feel bad for Ryan :) And hot damn, I am totally envious of your Christmas gift! Although knowing my history with appliances, it would end up sitting and looking pretty more than anything. I hardly use any of the appliances we got as wedding gifts, shame!
ReplyDeletehaha poor ryan - someday tex is going to have to bear that wrath and i feel so badly for him. he got some angry texts while i was stuck in traffic today and i can only imagine how much worse it will be for him when we're actually living in the same state.
DeleteA Vitamix? Lucky lucky duck. That is quite awesome and I am jealous. Rightfully so. I hope it's everything you dreamed it would be! Haha :)
ReplyDeleteSUCH a lucky duck and it is more than i dreamed!
DeleteAhhhhh all of last week I had a raging hunger beast living in my stomach, and it was driving me bonkers. I'd still feel starving after every meal...probably because the food status in my apartment was preeeeetty poor since I nearly ran out of everything on Wednesday, which is not and cannot be grocery shopping day. So, you know, instead of putting like 15 carrots into my daily bag o' veggies at lunch I was subsisting on three or four and cutting my pepper strips in half so it looked like I had more than I actually had. Yeah. That probably had a LOT to do with why I couldn't stop being hungry haha.
ReplyDeletehaha that's how i feel i have no idea why it is! and that's hilarious - i love that you stretched your veggies out like that. i can't handle only a few pepper strips - i gotta eat the whole thing or nothing.
DeleteI too cannot go a night it seems nowadays without sitting in bed and snacking on something only for me it's with a book! Last night I did sugar-free chocolate pudding, peanuts, and a sliced banana in a bowl all mixed up. Damn it was good.
ReplyDeleteThat breakfast sounds genius. Love the idea of using up the old bagel thins that way. I think that jam on a grilled cheese sounds FABULOUS. I'm thinking apricot jam with brie. Mmmm.
yum that sounds so delicious - you make me crave chocolate pudding like crazy, not gonna lie. it's not even something i eat but every time i see you post about it i want to go out and buy it. maybe i'll add it to my grocery list this week. and also brie. i already have apricot jam so i'm just one ingredient away from a fantastic grilled cheese. yum.
DeleteI'm so jealous you have a vitamix!!! That's definitely on wish list. Can't wait to see what you create with this. :)
ReplyDeletei am going to have to work on being creative. my mom informed me i need to make it worth it and therefore i cannot only make shakes, lol. perhaps i should challenge myself to try things from the recipe book twice a month or something...
DeleteCongrats on the vitamix!! Your dinner looks yum. And I too love some cereal in bed :)
ReplyDeletecereal in bed is the best!
DeleteI have never heard of Hip Pops until this post. Are they similar to Pop Chips??
ReplyDeletethey're sort of like pop chips only they're rice instead of potatoes. more like quakes. i haven't heard of them in any stores though since they're pretty much exclusive to the school lunch program my school uses.
DeleteBummer! They sound so good!
DeleteThat vitamin looks so amazing! I always need something to eat to end my day- i just have to lol usually i love toast with pb or cinnamon
ReplyDeleteyum that's definitely a good way to end the day! i pretty much always have to end my day with a bowl of something though...i don't know why but for some reason i just have to eat my dessert with a spoon :)
