fitness in your living room

yesterday i did best body bootcamp workout a, which was my first workout for week two. on tap was a full body circuit with cardio bursts (five minutes of steady cardio on the machine of your choice in between the circuit). i was heading home from work and looking at the workout and i realized that i had all the equipment i needed in my living room except for the cardio machine. as most things do, this made me realize how much i long to someday own a treadmill. then i realized that thanks to endless rounds of jillian michaels' videos, i can easily create five minute cardio burst circuits in my apartment - no machine necessary - AND i wouldn't have to trek all the way over to my gym to get my workout on. win-win in my book, especially since i was lacking motivation to work out to begin with. it got me thinking about how much i like having so many different options for my workouts, and having an at home option is really a huge bonus. i've found that most circuits can be modified or adapted to require just a few key pieces and my "home gym" (almost) fits into two little ikea baskets.

what i've got in my baskets:
foam roller
resistance band (wish i had a few more of these)
two yoga mats (one thicker one, one thinner one)
stability ball
dumbbells (2 of each: 5 lbs, 8 lbs, 10 lbs, 12 lbs, 15 lbs and 20 lbs)

i don't need anything more than twenty for the most part because let's be honest - i do a lot of things, but "lifting heavy" isn't one of them. if i am (on the off chance) doing a workout that requires more than 20 lb weights (basically squats are the only exercise that fits the bill for me) i'll take myself to the gym for that workout.

there are a TON of reasons i like working out at home, but here are my top 5:

1. you can wear whatever you want! i have certain workout gear that i'm not quite sure i'm bold enough to wear in public, such as a pair of short spandex shorts i bought on a whim pretending i was hollie before realizing that those shorts were writing a check my ass couldn't cash. there are times where i get down to the bare minimum in terms of available outfits because i haven't done laundry in a while and home workouts are perfect at that time because then i can wear the things i wouldn't be caught dead in out in public.

2. falling is much less embarrassing when no one is there to see it. pretty much the only company i have in my apartment is good old redbear and he doesn't laugh at me when i'm attempting scorpions and falling all over the place while i do it. or jumping lunges - don't get me started on those. lots of times if i get to a move that i know i can't really do at the gym, i'll skip it or modify because i'm embarrassed about doing it in front of people. this means i never get better. i have (almost) mastered scorpions by now and it's only because i was able to practice them in the comfort of my own home.

3. you can multitask - clear out your dvr while doing elbow planks? use your rest time to unload your dishwasher? the possibilities are endless. i love that my gym has tvs on all the cardio machines but lots of times they don't work or i'm too annoyed scrolling through the channels one by one to actually find something fun to watch, so i like having remote control over whatever it is i want to watch while i work out. and i STRETCHED yesterday for the first time in forever because i was able to do so while watching paula deen.

4. refueling is only a few steps away! i get super hungry after workouts and if i have to drive home from the gym (lots of times doing errands along the way) i end up getting back to my apartment completely ravenous and snack mindlessly while i'm prepping dinner. if i work out at home, i can either take the time to make a better snack (shakes are my favorite) or immediately start getting dinner ready as soon as i'm done.

5. it's SO much quicker. even if it's a longer workout, taking the time to drive to the gym, get ready in the locker room and then drive home takes a long time! it's so great to be able to quickly get dressed, get my sweat on and be done with it all and already be home. at the end of a long day with the kiddos, sometimes i lose motivation altogether just from thinking about how long the whole process will take.

what about you guys - do you ever work out at home? what are your favorite at home workouts?

  2. Sometimes I have a hard time motivating at home, but other times, nothing beats a quick at home workout! I especially love being able to wear whatever I want. It makes my life so much easier!

    1. agree with you on the motivation thing - sometimes it's tough when your couch is right there!

  3. I rarely workout at home, but when I do I love doing yoga, walking DVDs, or if I'm feeling really adventurous I will do a Jillian Michaels DVD...let's just say I haven't done one of those in awhile! ;)

  4. I love some of these. You never fail to make me laugh, especially with "those shorts were writing a check my ass couldn't cash". Oh my god I literally had to cover my mouth to prevent me from laughing out loud. All great reasons, especially the food. Wouldn't want to be a hangry beast when you arrived home to Teddy, now would you?

  5. Unless I'm running, my workout is at home hahahaha...no gym funds at the moment...and I highly approve and agree with all those reasons mentioned...especially the quicker and fuel right there...and being able to watch gossip girl is nice ;)

  6. I'm totally jealous of your at-home gym goods! We have a foam roller and a resistance band and... a puppy, who attacks anytime you lay on the ground to do push-ups or of the sort :P Can I invite myself over for a J. Michael's video please? I've been wanting to try one of her videos and hear they're a butt-kicking good time!

  7. Working out at home is the best. Even though I have a little gym in my apartment that's pretty convenient, I still always have to worry about fighting someone for a pair of dumbbells or the treadmill. Whenever I'm at home, I always praise the lord for the privacy.

    1. i especially hate my apartment gym when i'm trying to lift - so few weights SO many idiot guys who think they're the only ones who can use them. jerks.

  8. The gym was a triggering environment for me. I thought I would never work out at home again ... now, except for running, it's where I do all my workouts. In November, I'll be moving into my condo and will have a gym there -- hopefully I'll be one of the few who will want to use it (tangent: excited that we might get access to the pool at the hotel next door as well!! Fingers crossed!!).
The point I'm trying to make -- workouts at home are rocking, especially during the winter! :D

    1. i find that i'm typically one of the few in my apartment gym so i'll cross my fingers that it will be the same for you. i do love the easy access!

  9. It's obvious I love my hone gym (which is an actual home gym thanks to mom and dad). But when I was living in an apartment I would sometimes do circuits in my living room which was awesome since I could just wear my underwear and blast obnoxious rap music. The only thing about working out at home I didn't like is I would sometimes stop sooner than I would have at the gym because something in the kitchen or on my computer would just simply demand my attention.

    1. your setup is AWESOME with the home gym, and i love blasting obnoxious music when i'm in my living room working out. you're right about stopping sooner - i do that all the time. if there's no one watching me i'll quit earlier than i might otherwise. oh well, a workout is a workout!

  10. Back when I used to do more structured workouts, I actually did a lot of them at home for pretty much all of the reasons you mentioned, but the biggest one for me was probably because I just did NOT want to leave a warm house and drive to the gym when it was a) snowing, b) cold as hell, or c) extremely late/early. Even though I love the extra motivation that comes with being in a gym and feeding off other peoples' energy, I'm just a sucker for convenience... oh, and having food within arm's reach ;)

  11. I'm jealous of your bosu ball! I definitely like home work outs and used to do BodyRock work outs. I never do it when my roommate is around though bc I feel weird. I have asked her to face away when I am doing them before, ha! And yes driving to the gym is a total pain. I never go to the gym on the weekends any more because of the (my gym is in my office building).

  12. I don't usually work out at home, I get all distracted by the shiny things in the room...and the snacks. I almost stayed home to do workout B of BBBC today because I too will modify moves because there are other people around. I tried my best to suck it up though at the gym this morning and did surprisingly well! Got a whole set of scorpions in without falling!
